Meghan Markle and the son of Prince Harry are only 2 months old, but his unique name already inspires many new parents.
The name Archie was shot to the top of the popularity charts, according to Nameberry until 2019 the best place for baby boy names.
Archie, which means ‘really brave’, was on the rise even before the royal connection. The name dropped from the Top 1,000 list in the United States in the late 1980s, but returned to the list for the first time in 2018 as one of the fastest rising names in popularity. However, Archie has been a Top 100 name in England since 2000.
And the son of Meghan and Harry is not the only one who puts the name back in the spotlight. Amy Poehler and Will Arnett named their son Archie in 2008, although they placed Archibald on the birth certificate.
The choice of names of the duke and duchess of Sussex for their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, came as a big surprise to British oddsmakers. Their top choice for potential names included more traditional monikers such as Arthur, James, Philip and Albert. Bookings revealed that only 60 bets were placed on Archie at 100/1, representing exactly $ 130.
Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll of Scotland was also an ancestor of Princess Diana. The use of the nickname as a given name gives it a more relaxed, American atmosphere – while the middle name of the baby, Harrison, emerged in the Middle Ages as a family name meaning “son of Henry” or “son of Harry”.
Gayle King, who was part of Meghan’s star-studded baby shower in February, told her opinion about the name at the CBS Upfront presentation in New York.
“I love the name Archie,” she said. “It’s so interesting that everyone takes the name Archie. They’re nobody’s business. I’m sure they don’t care what we think of the name – they both like it.”
The host of CBS This Morning continued: “I thought his middle name means Harrison, son of Harry. Boog means connection or something I read. They’ve chosen a great name. They’ve chosen what works for them. But I thought it was awesome. “
While Isla has taken the best place for girl names so far this year, there is a royal connection with fifth place: it’s Charlotte, just like Kate Middleton and Prince William’s 4-year-old daughter.
Aside from Princess Charlotte, the name has a large number of celebrity fans. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. as well as Chelsea Clinton, Harry Connick Jr., Dylan McDermott, Sigourney Weaver and Colin Hanks all have daughters by name.
Although George did not cut in 2019, Louis is in 32nd place.
