Baby Sussex Will Be the Closest American Citizen in Line for the British Throne

Can an American citizen ever become ruler of England? It is unlikely, but now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have a baby together, it is also possible.

Baby Sussex is not even born yet and he is already breaking everything. First, an unprecedented number of Britons place bets on all sorts of details of the birth, from how large the baby will be to what name the royal couple will choose. People just can’t get enough of this little new addition to the British royal family.

The children of Prince William and Kate Middleton may have pushed Prince Harry further in line with succession, but he is technically still not that far away from the throne – not that he even wants to become king. Currently Prince Harry is sixth in line, meaning his son or daughter will be seventh. In a short time that Prince Charles becomes king, everyone will come a place closer.

But the most interesting thing is that the new royal baby can be technically American and British, which would be a first for British princes in the line of succession.

Will Baby Sussex be an American citizen?

There is another question about whether Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby will be an American citizen. To be eligible for dual nationality, Meghan must retain her current status as a citizen when she gives birth, which will happen within a few weeks.

There is no doubt that Markle is applying for British citizenship, but that process can take years and it can take a minimum of 12 months for Markle to live in the UK. That is why most people assume that the baby will be both American and British.

Even when an American gives birth to a baby abroad, that child is considered an American citizen, as long as the parent meets the requirements of citizenship – what Meghan Markle seems. Only one parent must be a citizen to be eligible for the baby. Regarding British citizenship, the same rules apply – only one parent must have that status so that the child can automatically be British.

The New York Times reported that the couple, if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s baby were to be considered a dual citizen, had to report the birth to the American consulate. It is still advisable if they choose to do so, but most royal experts think they will not worry.

Baby Sussex will be raised British

American born mother or not, Baby Sussex is born in the UK and in a royal family that takes tradition, duty and customs more seriously than most ordinary people. So even if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle take a strange detour from the daily routine and give their child a dual nationality, make no mistake that the child will be raised 100% British. Accent and such.

Yet it is pretty cool for Americans to think about the fact that a potential citizen is literally and figuratively close to the British throne. It is certainly history in the making.
