After his successful kidney cancer surgery, Cameron Mathison feels healthy, happy and grateful every day – and it appears that the role of the actor in the upcoming Hallmark Channel holiday film The Christmas Club inspired him to get the best possible MRI for his life saved.
The 50-year-old ET correspondent and Hallmark Channel host sat down with ET’s Keltie Knight – a friend and colleague from Mathison – where he started playing the role the movie played to motivate him to get checked out.
According to Mathison, The Christmas Club is about following the signs and viewing the little things in your life as little signs and clues of decisions to make.
“It was in this film that I thought:” This film is about following the signs and really paying attention and being observant. “I came from this film [thinking],” I’m not going to ignore this anymore, “he added.” That’s what inspired me to get a doctor’s recommendation to get an MRI. “
Mathison finally got the test, which caused doctors to discover a tumor that had grown in his kidney for about a decade. Fortunately, doctors were able to remove growth after the operation and the whole series of events stemmed from his decision to get tested.
“It saved my life,” Mathison shared. “See? These Hallmark Christmas movies are more powerful than you know.”
Now that Mathison is recovering and his prospects look as bright as ever, the actor says that the upcoming Christmas days feel more special than any other.
“It seems like the first vacation period of this next phase of my life,” he said. “I don’t want to be corny, but it’s almost a second chance. A second chance during the holidays.”
Regarding the experience itself, while Mathison said it was certainly frightening, the outcome on the other hand “made me appreciate a little more each day”.
He is also looking forward to the release of his new original holiday film Hallmark Channel, The Christmas Club, in which he shines across from Elizabeth Mitchell.
“I feel it will be one of people’s favorites. It is one of those films that is special. It has humor, it has love, it has surprises, it has romance, it has everything,” he said. “And it has Christmas!”
