Fans have long had a deep and irreparable hole in their hearts since Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo left NCIS. The popular character was not only a fan favorite, but also a key figure in the show’s crime solving team. Michael Weatherly has portrayed DiNozzo for a number of seasons and was crucial in providing both witty chatter and much-needed comic help.
One of the reasons the show has remained so popular is because of the excellent cast choices for his characters, including Weatherly’s DiNozzo.
Michael Weatherly’s character was a crucial part of the cast
Tony DiNozzo of Michael Weatherly was a pillar of the cast of the show. Built as both the comic relief and the team’s eye candy, this character has always contributed a light-hearted joke, even amidst the most awful criminal cases. His youthful antics have helped to make the brutal cases they discussed easier for the audience to tolerate.
Most loved, however, was his relationship with co-star Cote de Pablo, who played fellow agent Ziva David. The two shared a “cat and mouse” flirt on the show that captivated fans and pulled strings. This became especially heartbreaking when Ziva, presumed dead, was no longer a normal character on NCIS.
Weatherly was a long standing fixture on the series
Michael Weatherly first started playing Tony DiNozzo in 2003 and continued his regular role at NCIS until 2016. DiNozzo was a former homicide detective known for teasing his colleagues, quoting films and not being particularly happy with women. Weatherly played DiNozzo in every episode for all thirteen seasons and appeared in both the show’s spin-offs, NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS: Los Angeles.
After 13 seasons in the show, Weatherly left the series to branch out independently. He took the lead in the CBS legal drama, Bull. Weatherly plays Dr. Jason Bull, who heads a research firm known for its strategies for winning a lawsuit.
Could Weatherly return to ‘NCIS’?
Michael Weatherly told reporters that the decision to leave NCIS was a difficult one. It was ultimately a combination of “Cote de Pablo’s recent departure from the series, as well as his desire to branch out professionally. In season 11, when Ziva’s character was no longer part of the show, Weatherly began to feel like a lot of the chemistry with his colleagues had disappeared and he was ready to try something new.
“It came about at the right time. I was burned out by NCIS and I was ready for a new challenge,” Weatherly told reporters. “Sometimes change is as good as a rest.”
There may be more change on the horizon for Weatherly. Fans were hoping for a reunion of Tony and Ziva at NCIS, and rumors are floating around that there may be a possible renewal of their romance on the screen. Bringing Ziva and Tony back would bring fans back to NCIS in hordes, so it’s likely CBS will try this in the future.
