Derick Dillard placed a short caption on his picture of Jill Duggar and also some hashtags. “Baby Sam helps Jill Duggar in the kitchen 😍 #teachemyoung #ergobaby #goby” he wrote.
A few people found Derick’s post cute, funny, or a special moment caught between a mother and her son.
“What a wonderful thing to take a quick picture of how much this mommy loves her son,” one person said.
“This is a great way to get work done when a child is nagging and only Mommy wants it,” another wrote.
Counting On: Many people were offended by the post
While Derick Dillard received some positive comments on his post, many people were put off by his use of the expression “women’s work”. Critics weighed in, saying the 30-year-old law student should be helping his wife in the kitchen instead of taking funny pictures of her while she was working. Others thought he embraced outdated gender norms by assuming that cooking and cleaning were activities for women, not men.
“All this picture says is… Jill Duggar cooks with a child tied to her back while you have the luxury of standing there watching and taking a picture on your phone… “try to HELP her,” wrote one person.
“Hashtag “women’s work”? Wow and I was rooting for you too…,” another person commented.
Jill Duggar seemed to think it was funny
While people were quickly judging Derick Dillard on what they saw as a sexist comment, his wife didn’t seem to mind. She commented on her husband’s post and wrote “‘Baby’ Sam…😂 # women’s work 😂.”
Unlike some commentators, Jill Duggar seemed to have a sense of humor about her husband’s comment. It’s possible that the two were joking about Jill Duggar taking on “women’s work” because they actually share household chores. Or maybe she just saw the humor in the situation she was in when Derick Dillard snapped the picture.
Jill Duggar comes from a conservative family where men and women embrace traditional gender roles. Now that she has a family of her own, she seems to be largely stuck in the same dynamic. Her husband works or goes to school, and she stays at home and goes to homeschool with their two children. Based on what she shares on social media, she also seems to take on most of the household tasks, such as cooking. It is not clear whether Derick Dillard helps with those responsibilities.
