Does Claire’s Makeup Have Asbestos? Inside Edition Tested a Kit to Find Out

Claire’s is a refuge for young girls and teenagers, but are some of the eyeshadows and blushing potentially dangerous?

In a Claire’s New York store, Inside Edition bought a make-up kit with eyeshadow and lip gloss and sent it to two independent test labs.

Both labs found an eyeshadow in the set with asbestos, a known carcinogen.

Sean Fitzgerald, research director of the Scientific Analytical Institute, told Inside Edition that he was “shocked and upset” by the results.

“I see in this make-up that there are clear asbestos fibers in the microscope,” he said. “All asbestos should not be in make-up, especially make-up that is specially designed and sold to children.”

Claire disputed the finding and said that the analysis was both “misleading and incorrect, and not scientifically substantiated.”

This week the FDA said it also found asbestos in three Claire’s products, including an eyeshadow.

Claire’s also questioned the FDA results and said it had “significant errors”.

Worried mother Kristi Warner said she was worried because her daughter used Claire’s make-up.

“You would assume that before being put on a shelf, it has been tested and proven to be safe before it goes into the hands of a child,” she said.

The FDA does not inspect standard cosmetics before they are sold, but depends on manufacturers to check the safety of a product. Claire’s says that there is no evidence that his products are unsafe, but said that the items abounded from the shelves.

After our report was broadcast, we received the following statement from Claire’s:

Customer safety is our first priority at Claire’s. Last year we switched to talk-free production of our cosmetics. Although some products containing talc were still available in stores, following the FDA’s concerns about three of our make-up products, we picked up these items and the remaining talc-based inventory, all of which are being destroyed. We offer a full refund to anyone who returns talc-based products.

We take these actions out of an overabundance of caution and remain confident that all products purchased from Claire are safe. We look forward to working with the Food and Drug Administration to ensure the highest safety standards for all cosmetics.
