Netflix once again had a successful job last year and planted its flag in the romantic comedy genre, with hits like ‘Set It Up’ and ‘To All the Boys I Loved Before’. Now the streaming giant is ready to go “Someone Great.”
Netflix has released the first trailer on Wednesday for the latest rom-com, ‘Someone Great’.
The film, which was directed by director-feature film director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, shines with Gina Rodriguez, LaKeith Stanfield, Brittany Snow and DeWanda Wise (“She’s Gotta Have It”).
In the trailer, the ambitious music journalist Jenny (Rodriguez) is devastated when her 9-year-old boyfriend (Stanfield) decides to stop it instead of doing long distances after Jenny lands her dream job at an iconic magazine in San Francisco. Cue the friends.
“Actually, I really want you to call your work address and say you have your period or something and just come to my apartment”, Jenny van Rodriguez tells her two best friends Erin (Wise) and Blair (Snow) after her break up. “I will leave in a week and then I will turn 30 and then I will probably die, I need a final epic day with my girls.”
“Someone Great” is a story about friendship, love and what it means to let go of your twenties and to travel to adulthood. “Life is about growing up, going up and going further”, the trailer says in text about the screen.
“This is the end of an era, everything is changing,” Jenny tells her friends during a night out.
Netflix’s co-heads of Original Independent Film, Matt Brodlie and Ian Bricke, told TheWrap in February that they saw an opportunity to tackle the forgotten romantic comedy genre, which until now seemed to be rewarding and reviving the genre.
“Someone Great” seems to have a slightly different approach than the typical girl-meets-boy scenario, instead focusing on the breakup and subsequent growth.
The film was produced by Feig and Feie’s production company Feigco Entertainment, but also by Emily Gipson at the I Can & I Will Productions company of Gina Rodriguez, and Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron at Likely Story.
“Someone Great” hits Netflix on April 19. View the trailer above.
