Prince William is more popular than his father, Prince Charles, for many reasons. He may be further in line before the throne, but Prince William is younger, more handsome, and has a better public reputation than his father, whose reputation has never been fully restored after cheating Princess Diana.
Although there are some proponents who would prefer the Prince Charles succession line to be completely skipped, that is a very unlikely scenario. But one thing that all those proponents of Prince William do not realize is that he has more in common with his father than they think.
Prince Charles is not perfect … but neither is Prince William. It appears that these two have a number of similar characteristics that most people do not notice.
They’re both committed to being good fathers
The reputation of Prince Charles received the biggest blow when it became known that he had an affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles. Royal fans were fiercely loyal to Princess Diana, and although it was later revealed that she was also unfaithful, it didn’t matter. Everyone seemed to be on her side.
Then Princess Diana died tragically in a car accident and everything got worse. This could have been the decisive moment when everyone decided to hate Prince Charles, but the opposite happened instead.
When his ex-wife died, people were irritated that Prince Charles did not seem desperate. But one thing they could not deny was how he hurried to his children’s side and made it a point to help them recover from their loss.
“One of the most difficult things a parent has to do is tell your children that your other parent has died,” Harry said in a BBC documentary about the death of Princess Diana. “I don’t know how you deal with that. But you know, he was there for us.”
Say what you want about Prince Charles – at least he realized what mattered. Some say it’s because his own father, Prince Philip, was so far away. But Prince William is more like his own father, who remains involved with his children and their lives.
They both grew up knowing they’d be king
It is impossible for us ordinary people to understand the enormous pressure to know that you will someday rule a country. Both Prince Charles and Prince William spent their formation years as part of the royal family, and only they know the unique challenges that this level of responsibility entails.
Prince Harry once famously said that nobody wants to be king – not really. “We don’t do this for ourselves, but for the greater well-being of people,” he told Newsweek. “Is there someone from the royal family who wants to become king or queen? I don’t think so, but we will perform our duties at the right time.”
Did they both cheat?
So far, Kensington Palace has declined to comment on those rumors about Rose Hanbury and Prince William. But if there is any validity for those claims, it will prove that Prince William and Prince Charles have one thing in common: infidelity.
Skeptics point out that Prince William’s chances of cheating Kate Middleton are slim, because he is generally opposed to cheating. Even if he were tempted, seeing how his father’s case destroyed their family would make him highly unlikely to subject his own children to that kind of drama.
But yes, maybe he thought he could get away with it? Children also tend to mimic the behavior they see, whether they realize it or not. The Prince Charles affair could have made Prince William more inclined to cheat, simply because that was his example of how spouses behave.
We may never know for sure if Prince William has cheated on Kate Middleton or if it is all one big common rumor. But cheater or not, Prince William has a lot in common with his father.
