Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, are no strangers to making headlines. Every day the royal couple treats an attack of media attention, with fans desperate to learn every detail they can about the royal newlyweds.
Now fans of the pair can follow them even more personally – Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have just launched their own Instagram account.
Is the new Instagram account breaking royal protocol?
Historically, the royal family has taken a very practical approach when it comes to social media. Although there are a number of social media accounts that share certain events within the royal family as a group, they actually have a strict set of rules that they must follow when it comes to their public images.
In addition, the social media accounts of the royal family are not actually controlled by a member of the family, so although fans are certainly fond of seeing the images shared on the platforms, it is clearly less personal than other social media pages of celebrities.
However, with Prince Harry’s marriage to Meghan Markle, there has been a clear change in the palace’s attitude to social media. With the huge amount of criticism that Markle receives daily, not all positively, the royal family has recently published a series of guidelines made with the intention of hacking into hateful online responses and responding accordingly.
You would think this would scare the palace to allow even more social media accounts, so it was even more surprising when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle launched their own Instagram account on April 2.
Did the queen personally approve the account?
Prior to her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle was quite active on social media. She had a popular lifestyle blog and regularly shared a glimpse of her life through Instagram. However, her accounts were deactivated when she became a royal family member, in accordance with royal tradition.
She is probably very excited to start playing things back on Instagram and to make contact with fans in a more personal way. While the first post that the couple shared on April 2 did not exactly specify what they would post, they did provide some clues.
In their first post, they said they look forward to sharing the work that inspires them, the causes that drive them, and important announcements. Eagle-eyed fans were quick to point out that “important announcements” may contain baby news, as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expect their first child in late April or early May.
Whether the couple shares personal photos of themselves or their baby or not, having their own Instagram account is a huge step forward for the royal family – it drives them to the modern age in a big way.
