The 55-year-old filed the lawsuit regarding an opinion piece Amber, 32, wrote for the Washington Post in December 2018, in which she spoke about her experiences as a victim of domestic violence.
Although Depp was not mentioned specifically in the piece, the actor’s legal team claimed that the article’s implication was that Depp had committed domestic violence against her – accusations that he denies ‘categorically’.
In court documents obtained by The Blast, the Depp team says: “Ms. Heard claimed to write from the perspective of “a public figure representing domestic violence” and claimed that she “felt the full force of the anger of our culture for women expressing themselves” when she spoke “against sexual violence.”
‘The article depends on the central premise that Ms. Heard was a victim of domestic violence and that Mr Depp had committed domestic violence against her … The clear implication of the opinion piece that Depp is a domestic abuse is categorically and demonstrably incorrect . Depp never misused Ms. Heard. Her allegations against him were false when they were made in 2016. It was an extensive hoax to generate positive publicity for Mrs. Heard and to advance her career. ‘
Amber’s lawyer Eric M George said in a statement to People: “This frivolous action is just the last of the repeated attempts by Johnny Depp to silence Amber Heard. She will not be silenced.
“Mr. Depp’s actions prove that he is unable to accept the truth of his persistent abuse. But while he looks hypocritical in order to bring about self-destruction, we will gain the upper hand by defeating this unfounded lawsuit and put an end to the continued harassment of my client by Mr. Depp and his legal team. ‘
In the Washington Post, Aquaman star Amber said: “I write this as a woman who had to change my phone number every week because I received death threats. For months I seldom left my apartment and when I did, I was chased by camera drones and photographers, on motorcycles and in cars. Tabloid stores that put photos of me spun them in a negative light.
“I had the feeling that I was on trial in the court of public opinion – and my life and livelihood depended on countless judgments far beyond my power.”
Heard married Depp in February 2015, four years after they met on the set The Rum Diary.
The actress was given a temporary restraining order from Depp five days after she filed for divorce in 2016 and claimed that the actor verbally and physically abused her.
Amber and Johnny came to a settlement and the restraining order was rejected, with their joint statement: “Our relationship was intensely passionate and sometimes fleeting, but always bound to love.
“Neither party has made false accusations for financial gains. There was never an intention of physical or emotional damage. ‘
Amber donated the proceeds of the divorce to the American Civil Liberties Union and the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
