More Men Undergoing Plastic Surgery, Cosmetic Procedures Than Ever Before

ARLINGTON HOOGTES, III. – Men have become more involved in plastic surgery and other cosmetic procedures to improve their physical appearance and increase self-esteem, according to a study published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Body image and problems with appearance are traditionally associated with and discussed by women, but these problems are increasingly common in men. In 2017, more than 1.3 million cosmetic procedures were performed on American men, according to the report.

“More men talk to each other about plastic surgery and the results they see, and as the stigma diminishes, men come in to tell them which procedures might be appropriate for them,” says Dr. Lorelei Grunwaldt, a board member. certified plastic surgeon in Pittsburgh, in a statement. “When I explain the wide range of operations and procedures available to reach their goals, I see the look of relief on their face.” For many men, it can have a procedure on a part of their body that they are confident of. to have a positive impact on how they see themselves. “

Researchers say that common cosmetic procedures that have long been associated with women are becoming increasingly popular among men. Liposuction procedures for men have increased by 23 percent compared to five years ago, while abdominal wall corrections have increased by 12 percent. Perhaps surprisingly, surgery for breast reduction in men has been the highest, with 30 percent more procedures in men in the past five years.

Doctors say that the rates of plastic surgery in men increase in all age groups, with elderly men who prefer procedures such as filler injections and Botox. Filler injections have increased by 99 percent since 2000 and the Botox procedures have quadrupled.

“Some people call it the ‘executive edge’ because many patients report that they want to look younger to continue to compete in the workplace,” says Dr. Jeffrey Janis, President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. “But I think men often want to be as young as they feel.”

Janis notes that in all of these procedures, it is always recommended that patients visit a surgeon certified by the board to ensure the highest levels of safety and satisfaction.
