In public, nicknames are no-no in the royal family. However, behind closed doors, members of the monarchy do not call each other with their official royal titles. Instead, the royal family has a collection of sweet, charming nicknames for each other – many of which belong to Queen Elizabeth.

It appears that the queen has actually received many nicknames from her relatives. But none can be compared to the cute nickname that Prince William gave his grandmother when he was a little boy. What does Prince William call the Queen? Find out, come on.

What does Prince William call the queen

According to gossip chronicler Richard Kay, Prince William had a hard time saying “grandma” when he was a little boy. The columnist told Daily Mail that once, after Prince William crashed in Buckingham Palace, the young royal woman screamed for someone called “Gary.” When royal assistants asked, “Who is Gary?” The queen allegedly confirmed that she was Gary and explained that he had not yet fully mastered “Granny”.

It is unclear if Prince William actually still calls Queen Elizabeth Gary, but wouldn’t that be great if he did? Prince Harry, Princess Eugenie and other members of the royal family are said to call their grandmother “grandmother”, so it would not surprise us if Prince William did the same.

In addition to Gary and Granny, Queen Elizabeth has quite a few nicknames. Just like his father, Prince George came up with a sweet nickname for his great-grandmother. According to reports, the young prince – and his sister, Princess Charlotte – calls Queen Elizabeth “Gan Gan.” That said, Gan Gan is not really unique to Queen Elizabeth. PopSugar reports that “Gan Gan” is a name used by Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry to address their great-grandmothers. With the next generation of royals, the nickname has become a royal name tradition.

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren are not the only creative ones in the family. Queen Elizabeth, the father of Queen Elizabeth, used to call her ‘Lilibet’, inspired by the way the then princess pronounced her name as a little girl. Prince Philip also has a sweet nickname for the love of his life. The Duke of Edinburgh would call Her Majesty “Kool”. And Meghan Markle follows Princess Diana and calls her grandmother “Mama”.

Royal family nicknames

Queen Elizabeth is not the only one with cute nicknames. Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and other members of the royal family have their own nicknames.
