When Diana Spencer married the Prince of Wales in 1981, she appeared to be a beautiful, but incredibly shy woman. She was reluctant to give interviews or to appear in public too often and did not know how to present herself or what image she wanted to create. In 1983, Princess Diana and Prince Charles would travel to Australia and New Zealand with their nine-month-old son Prince William. The tradition in the royal family until that time was that two heirs to the throne would never travel together on the same plane. The rule was to protect the line of succession in case something should happen on the flight. Princess Diana, who was incredibly attached to her son, however, refused to leave him in the care of nannies and not only that, was determined to travel on the same plane as she and Prince Charles.

How do her children follow her example?

Like his late mother, Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, practice hands-on parenthood with their three small children. As can be seen on photos and video, the two often come at eye level with their children when they chat with them, a movement claimed by child experts helps children to feel more like equals in a conversation. Even though they are royalty, they are not above getting dirty with their children, playing outside with them, and participating in family sports. Of course they probably share many stories with their children about their deceased grandmother, which makes them feel close to her, even though she is not there, and there are reportedly many pictures of Princess Diana in the entire family’s house.
