Princess Diana Changed Royal Parenting Forever by Breaking This Rule

Princess Diana became known throughout her life for many incredible things, from her humanitarian work to the charming way she interacted with the audience.

Perhaps her most durable legacy, and the one that will surely live on through her sons and their wives, the way she raised her two children. Princess Diana was not only a hands-on parent in a way that no royal family member had before, but she set the standard for parents around the world.

What rule did Princess Diana break?

When Diana Spencer married the Prince of Wales in 1981, she seemed a beautiful but incredibly shy woman. She was reluctant to give interviews or to appear in public too often and did not know how to present herself or what image she wanted to create. However, when she became a mother, the real princess Diana started to come to light.

In 1983, Princess Diana and Prince Charles, along with their nine-month-old son Prince William, would travel to Australia and New Zealand. The tradition in the royal family until that moment was that two heirs of the throne would never travel together in the same plane. The rule was to protect the line of succession in case something would happen on the flight. Princess Diana, who was incredibly attached to her son, however, refused to leave him in the care of nannies and not only that, was determined to travel on the same plane as she and Prince Charles.

Princess Diana’s insistence that Prince William stayed with her was shocking to many royal insiders, who thought that her embarrassment would prevent her from really standing on her feet. Not only did she get her way on that topic, but it also set a standard for her strength and determination in the coming years. Princess Diana would eventually become an enchanting combination of sweetness and strength, and her pioneering decision in 1983 was to live for decades.

How do her children follow her example?

Like his late mother, Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, practice hands-on parenthood with their three small children. As can be seen on photos and video, the two often reach eye level with their children when they chat with them, a movement that is claimed by childcare experts, helps children to feel more like equals in a conversation. Even though they are royalty, they are not getting dirty with their children, playing with them outside and participating in family sports. Of course they probably share a lot of stories with their children about their deceased grandmother, which makes them feel close to her, even though she is not there, and there are many photos of Princess Diana in the family’s house.

Prince Harry will also likely honor his mother’s memory

Prince Harry, the youngest son of Princess Diana, will probably also honor his mother’s memory when he gets his first child, which will arrive in late April or early May. Prince Harry was very close to his mother and even gave some of her jewelry to his wife Meghan Markle as a way to keep her memory alive and to involve her in their marriage. Of course, it is common knowledge that both Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle like to celebrate their deceased mother-in-law through fashion, and often channel fashion princesses in subtle ways.

Although Princess Diana may be gone, her legacy lives on through her children and grandchildren. Royal family fans will probably receive even more tribute and nods to the princess in the coming days when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle present Princess Diana’s newest grandchild in the world.
