R. Kelly has been released from prison, according to several reports.
Three days after his arrest for not paying child benefit, the 52-year-old singer was released from Cook County jail on Saturday after receiving a $ 161,000 child support contribution, the Associated Press reported.
Kelly was detained on Wednesday after failing to pay more than $ 161,663 in child benefit to his second ex-wife, Andrea Lee, for a trial that morning. The two share three children – Joann, 21, Jay, 19 and Robert, 17. A spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff’s office told ET after his arrest that Kelly would be released when he paid the full amount of child benefit.
Kelly’s rep told ET on Wednesday that the singer had offered to pay $ 50,000 to $ 60,000 during his trial and to draw up a payment plan, but the judge rejected the offer. The publicist said Kelly was “deported” by the refusal.
The time of the performer in prison was his second in a few weeks. He surrendered on February 22 after being charged in Cook County, Illinois, with 10 graves of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. A spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff’s Office told ET at the moment the singer was released from Cook County Jail late last month after $ 100,000 was posted. Kelly was held to a $ 1,000,000 bond, of which he had to pay 10 percent.
Kelly has continually denied all allegations of sexual abuse against him and defended himself in a recent sit-down interview with Gayle King for CBS This Morning. During the interview, he also opened his finances and discussed why he did not pay child benefit.
Kelly claimed he could not work and that his ex-wife, Lee, “destroys” his name. “How can I pay child benefit? How? If my ex-wife destroys my name and I can not work? How can I work? How can I be paid? How can I take care of my children? How? Use your common sense,” he said by sobbing and yelling, before he claimed that “people have stolen my money.”
