Dressing up during pregnancy is not easy – just ask Serena Williams.
It has been almost two years since the tennis star gave birth to her first child, daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian, with husband Alexis Ohanian in early September 2017. Prior to the arrival of the little one, the wardrobe was important to Williams.
“The thing is, during my pregnancy, I always made sure I was dressed, or I was wearing heels and it would kill me,” she recalled Essence as the September cover star. “But I would just wear the heels and then I would take them off in the restaurant or wherever we would go. Then I would put them on again. I had to be fantastic.”
The star further remembered: “There is even a photo from the day before I had the baby. We went out to dinner and I was wearing my blue outfit and I thought, I’m going to try to be stylish this entire pregnancy.”
With a brand new baby in her life, things inevitably changed – including the clothes. “I tried, but after that it was a bit of a disappointment, certainly more than during,” she told Essence. “We deserve a disappointment, but we also deserve an upgrade.”
Just after Olympia turns 2 years old, Williams gives fans the opportunity to upgrade their fall wardrobe with a New York Fashion Week presentation for its eponymous line, S by Serena. Customers can buy everything on her catwalk on 10 September. And just like her, Williams dresses women for everything in their busy days.
“Regarding clothing, we really wanted to have fun and be confident. It looks like every aspect of my life. But not just my life, the lives of most women,” she told the magazine. “We have a job, or we have an event going somewhere, or we have something more serious that we want to dress for, or maybe we want to go out and relax with our friends, or we just walk around the house as a mother. So then we were designing the collection, we wanted to talk to every aspect of that woman. “
The Essence issue will be in the kiosk on August 16.
