Watching sunsets and sunrises may be the secret to boosting mood and sparking awe, according to a study by researchers from the University of Exeter. The study found that watching the sun rise or set promotes increased perceptions of natural beauty and can trigger significant boosts in feelings of awe, which can enhance positive social behavior and increase positive emotions.
The researchers used computer graphics to show over 2,500 participants images of urban and natural environments, and found that whenever these images included a sunrise or a sunset, the group considered them to be substantially more beautiful compared to the same shot seen under sunny conditions at any other time of day.
Spending time outdoors has long been known to have a positive impact on mental and physical health, but most studies have focused on the impact of nature under calm, blue skies. This study is unique in its focus on variations in weather and the daily rhythms of the sun, which are referred to as “ephemeral phenomena.” The study authors believe that taking a moment to appreciate the daily rhythms of our planet can help improve overall well-being.
The study also found that awe is a tough emotion to define, but the increased feelings of awe sparked by watching sunsets or sunrises can potentially improve mood and increase positive emotions. The researchers suggest that taking a few minutes to watch the sunset or sunrise can be an easy and accessible way to improve overall well-being.
