Season 3 of The Handmaid’s Tale is fast approaching the end and fans can’t wait to see what happens to all the big players. We’ve been following June Osborne since the beginning, because Gilead initially abducted her to become a maid for the Waterfords. Now June is planning to get her daughter, Hannah, from Gilead along with more than 50 other children who are trapped in the totalitarian state.
Fans have been rooting since the beginning since June, but we cannot forget the story of Serena Joy Waterford. She and husband Fred Waterford helped Gilead turn into the oppressive, horrible place where it is – but it seems that Serena is ready to turn things around. This is what Yvonne Strahovski, the actress who plays Serena, says about Serena’s latest betrayal to Fred.
Serena Waterford just betrayed husband Fred Waterford for visits with Nichole
Serena Waterford is a complex, smart and selfish motivated character – and occasionally fans see a glimpse of who she really is under her green overcoat. Because of flashbacks in the show, we know she was a writer before she became known as the commander’s wife in Gilead. And while she lacks the luxury she once had as a free woman, nothing surpasses her desire to have her own child.
After June gave birth to her daughter, Nichole, while Serena was watching over the Waterford, Serena encouraged Nichole as if the baby were hers. At the end of season 2, we see Serena allow June to remove Nichole from Gilead – but it seems that Serena has changed his mind. Now she wants time with Nichole no matter how she can get it. And most recently we saw that she arranged for Fred’s arrest when they entered Canada. In exchange for Fred, she seems to have concluded a deal where she is now an asylum seeker handing in a war criminal – and she also gets to see Nichole.
Yvonna Strahovski said it ‘feels good’ for Serena to turn on Fred
There was a moment when Serena really loved Fred. But her desire for motherhood (and perhaps a little justice for the way Fred treated her) was enough for her to arrest her husband. And Strahovski has also commented on Serena’s behavior in season 3 of the show.
As Strahovski told Harper’s Bazaar: “Yes, it feels good to finally have done it, both for me and the actress and for Serena! … She never really trusted Fred, who came from season 2, so it’s very mind a 12-episode arc with this one. “
We must not forget that in season 2, Serena had her finger amputated after reading a Bible quote for the Gilead male leaders. And while Serena kept away from Fred after the incident, Strahovski told the publication that she was nervous. Serena would yield to Fred’s affection and remorse. Although we know that Mrs. Waterford is offering her husband, it was by no means an easy decision to make. “I really think there is a huge mourning component in what she does,” Strahovski said, adding that it is “bittersweet”. “There is so much satisfaction, but also so much loss and destruction.”
Strahovski thinks Serena still cares for her husband, however
Although Serena has made the decision to hand in Fred, there are still a lot of complex feelings. Strahovski said to Variety: “I don’t think it was easy for her to walk away from Fred. … I think it’s very difficult because I think she still cares – I think she really wanted it to work. So it says goodbye to something she will grieve, and she feels guilty about the decision she has made. Yet Serena knows exactly what to do to get closer to the child she thinks is right for her. And it had to result in Fred’s arrest.
Serena may be based in Canada, but her battle is not over yet. Even during her guided visit to Nichole, the friend of June, Moira, reminds Serena that June is Nichole’s real mother. “That’s so hard for her. That’s the only reason she went there, and it’s so slow and she doesn’t have the time with the baby she imagined. It’s so anticlimactic to her,” Strahovski said.
What becomes Fred as a result of Serena’s actions, and what happens to baby Nichole now that Serene is so close? We will have to wait.
