If you have never heard of the huge (and growing) Duggar family, you may be a beginner in pop culture. This gigantic family was the star of one of TLC’s most popular shows of all time: 19 Kids and Counting, from 2008 to 2015. Dad, Jim Bob Duggar and his old wife, Michelle Duggar, are members of an ultra-religious and politically conservative community that has modesty appreciates, the patriarch obeys as the head of a family, and especially has many and many children. The family has been widely questioned in the media because of their anti-gay, conservative “value-voter” views.
But even before their many family scandals became public, millions of viewers tune into the inner workings of their super-large family life every week. Popular episodes contain details about how the Duggars in the world are able to do, wash and cook for so many people. And what about the privacy of the bathroom (answer: they have nine bathrooms and seven showers in their 7000 square foot house). Want to know more about Jim Bob, Michelle, Joshua, Jana, John-David, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah, Jeremiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn- Grace and Josie? Follow along if you are intrigued and we will give you an overview of the untold truth of 19 Kids and Counting.
The show was canceled during its highest rated season
Amid all the pressure from the public and other media, TLC announced in July 2015 that it would no longer broadcast 19 Kids and Counting. In their press release, the network stated that “they were particularly concerned about the victims in this situation, including the Duggar family.”
In light of criticism that more than a year after the scandal was unveiled, the network broadcasted new episodes from 19 Kids and Counting, and apparently used the molestation case as an assessment booster, TLC worked with “victim rights and interest groups” for a 60-minute duration producing a documentary about victims of abuse. However, because this documentary also played the Duggar, it has suppressed little negative public opinion.
The kids are homeschooled with an… interesting curriculum
Get ready to a) get some insight into the dubious reason why Duggar’s parents treated Josh’s molestation crime in the same way and b) are extremely creepy. It is well known that the Duggars have long opted to take their children home. But did you know that the Christian curriculum that they follow has its own part in sexual abuse scandals?
Gawker (of whom we are pretty sure this is the Duggar’s least favorite publication) reported in 2015 that the family is following a home training program from the Advanced Training Institute, which is “a Bible-based homeschooling program managed by alleged cult figure Bill Gothard. “Gothard himself has been accused of a lot of inappropriate sexual claims on young girls, but that’s not where the creep ends. The curriculum itself contains a whole section on what to do when an older male child sexually abuses a younger child of the same family (!).
Another Gawker article reported on such a “lesson,” which guides parents on what to do when they discover that “an older brother was guilty of sexual abuse of young people in his family.” When the older brother “repented”, he asked a number of questions – including: “What doctrine could each child [emphasis from us] have given to resist evil?” and “What factors in the home have contributed to rudeness and temptation?” The similarities are creepy, right?
They have been associated with the controversial Quiverfull movement
Although the belief system of the 19 Kids and Counting family seems to correspond exactly to the controversial “Quiverfull” movement of Christianity, which is related to the ministry of the Duggars, the family has stated that it does not consider itself part of that group. The Quiverfull name comes from Psalm 127 that compares someone’s children with an arrow quiver from an archer full of arrows. The extremely conservative and religious group believes that it is the duty of a woman to produce as many children as possible during their fertile years. Nancy Campbell, a representative of the Quiverfull movement, has publicly stated that the group is convinced that they are building an army for God. In a blog post on her site Above Rubies, she called a fertile womb a “weapon against Satan.”
Jim Bob once served in the House of Representatives
Long before 19 Kids and Counting, as well as the scandal, fame and money associated with the star of a hit reality TV series, family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar served his state of Arkansas as a house representative. He ran on an anti-abortion family value platform and served for a period in the early 2000s, before challenging the incumbent Arkansas for his senate seat and losing in 2002.
There’s a reason why all the kids’ names start with the letter ‘J’
You may have noticed that all children on 19 Kids and Counting have given names that start with the letter ‘J.’ Is this a bizarre or prudish nod to the Kardashian Klan? Although that would be great, that is unfortunately not the reason for the alliterative list. Instead, as Michelle wrote in her blog, the inspiration came from the Bible. Surprised?
They called their first son Joshua (of biblical fame), and things started from there. A series of twins followed. John was another biblical name, and because they wanted to name the twin Ana, after a relative, the parents decided to add a J in front (Jana) “in honor.” They maintained the custom for eternity and stated that they did not want future children to be jealous that they were not part of the J tradition.
A new baby for Josh and Anna
Although in a gigantic extended family like this, a new baby on the road is hardly unexpected news, after both sex abuse and a cheat scandal such as the one Josh Duggar and his wife Anna went through, introducing a new baby to the world takes on an extra meaning. But low and behold, on March 17, 2017, the following public message from Josh and Anna was posted on the family website, entitled “Family Announcement.”
“Almost the last two years we have been working quietly to save our marriage, to focus on our children and to rebuild our lives as a family. Doing that is never easy after a breach of trust. We have learned that a life of faith and rebuilding a life together happens simply one by one, while we continue our journey as a family and rebuild our lives, we are happy to share with you that we are expecting a new baby later this year. we can’t wait to see and kiss the face of this sweet new boy! “
Since relationship experts generally agree that adding a new baby doesn’t solve a difficult relationship, the news may receive mixed reviews from show fans. However, having more and more children is part of the Duggar religion, following their habits may help the young couple to rebuild.
Josh was a catfisher
About a month after Josh and Anna’s pregnancy announcement on March 17, 2017, Life & Style exclusively broke the story that Josh will be “interrogated” about his 2015 Ashley Madison and OKCupid cheating scandal.
In Touch had just reported that a lawsuit against Joshua Duggar was filed by Matt McCarthy, an “LA-based DJ and photographer who claims that Josh has stolen his image and used it as his own on the cheat site.” So Josh not only tried to cheat his wife, he was also catfishing women online with stolen photos.
According to the exclusive Life & Style lawyer, the plaintiff’s lawyer will “ask questions about his activities on both Ashley Madison and OKCupid” in an effort to “know the extent of the fraudulent behavior”. That means that Duggar must give the names and details of all the women he has spoken or met during his dalliances, and wife Anna will have to endure it all.
Jessa refused to kiss the groom at her wedding
Us Weekly broke the story that during the fifth Duggar child, Jessa’s marriage to Ben Seeward on Novermber 1, 2014, the two refused to kiss on the altar after being called husband and wife. The article says that an unnamed source shared the couple’s opinion that they had waited their entire lives to kiss someone (someone, amirite?), And so they chose to do the deed privately rather than for them “almost 1,000 guests”.
Okay, that actually makes sense. But the strange practice is actually not one of the many family rules that appear on 19 Kids and Counting. We know that Jessa’s older sister and her husband, Derick Dillard, were not too shy to close lips to a crowd at their wedding just a few months prior to Jessa and Ben’s. They then released a striking photo of the kiss in an exclusive People.
Mom and Dad Duggar didn’t wait until marriage
Okay, we don’t know how far daddy Jim Bob and mom Michelle Duggar actually went before their wedding in 1984, but we do know they went ahead and stole a hug before they were allowed.
As Michelle says, in video images from TLC, and quoted here by E! Online: “We didn’t save our first kiss for our wedding anniversary and we really regret that we didn’t. We should have done that.” The patriarch and matriarch of Duggar have also been open about the fact that they chose the pill at their first marriage, which they now regret.
Big brother is watching
If one of the children has an official relationship, they can go out with their love, but only with company! As Today said in their interview with the Duggars: “Their daughters are determined to always have a chaperone with them, whether it’s Jim Bob and Michelle or one of their siblings.” Why? “Having that responsibility really prevents things from going the wrong way,” said Jim Bob. And Michelle says finding out who a person really is is “easier if you have more eyes to look out for. There are many things you can learn by not mating alone.”
Okay, so mom and dad want to make sure that no saggy pussy goes down like parents do. But the surprising thing is that when one of the Duggar sisters goes out on a ‘free party’, one of the boys in the family can act as a chaperone. Even a younger brother. As Michelle said today, “The brothers can see how they treat mum and dad, or see if they show respect to the sisters,” giving the Duggar boys a so-called special way to gain access to a friend’s value.
A wedding tradition
If you’re tired of hearing about all the dubious ways in which the Duggars raise their children, take courage. Not everything the 19 Kids and Counting family does is wrapped up in scandals. People shared a recent “behind the scenes” clip of TLC’s Counting On, with the tradition of Grandma Duggar’s wedding dress. Jim Bob’s mother, Grandma Duggar, first gave Michelle her own dress to wear for Michelle’s wedding to Jim Bob. Michelle explained how she is paying in advance and said, “Now it is tradition that we have given a fragment of grandma’s and my dress to our girls … for them to use in their marriage.”
According to People, Jill had a cut of the dress put in a handkerchief and “stuffed in [her] bouquet” as she walked down the island, and Jessa had her cut made of the meaningful dress in a “small rosette”. For Jinger, the clothing designer cut a heart-shaped piece of fabric from the dress and sewed it on the chest of Jinger’s new wedding dress.
