There are certain people you would expect to hang around with royals: other royals, dignitaries, perhaps even musical legends such as Elton John, just to name a few. But there are also certain people that you would not think the royal family had ever heard of, but still hang out with.
Former fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello falls somewhere in between those two groups. Not that she’s not talented, but she’s a fairly new star, especially in her solo career, and the music she’s holding on doesn’t seem to arouse the interest of the queen.
But recently Prince William and Kate Middleton have proven that they not only knew who Cabello was, but actually wanted to spend some time with her!
Why did Prince William and Kate Middleton invite Camila Cabello over?
So Prince William and Middleton didn’t really have Cabello for tea, but they invited her to help them honor the 10 finalists in the BBC Radio 1 Teen Heroes Awards.
“I was so honored to be invited to Kensington Palace to meet this year’s Teen Hero finalists and celebrate with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,” Cabello told the BBC, People said. “Hearing the incredible things that these Teen Heroes have done is so inspiring! Their passion and dedication to helping others is great and they really blew me away! “
What are the Radio 1 Teen Heroes Awards?
The Teen Heroes Awards recognize 12 to 17 year olds who inspire others and make a difference in their community. The program is now in its tenth year.
This year’s winners are Hazel, a 12-year-old who has xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), a genetic disorder that limits how much she can be exposed to UV light. When she was three years old, doctors told her to stay inside. Instead, she has spent her time climbing mountains and raising money for charity.
The winners will be celebrated on November 24 during the Radio 1 Teen Awards.
Shawn Mendes’ encounter with the royals
Cabello is not the only pop star who recently had a meeting with the royal family. Cabello’s friend Shawn Mendes also had a run-up with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
“I’m half British, so my grandfather and my nan were there, so it was a huge deal for them,” he said at the Ellen DeGeneres Show about performing for the queen.
“I’m in this backstage area and I’m waiting to go on stage and the Queen just walks next to me. And you can’t say anything, you can’t talk to her unless she talks to you first.”
But the queen never said anything.
“So it was like 10 minutes of uncomfortable silence between me and the queen. She didn’t look at me at all, I looked around a few times and I thought I probably shouldn’t have looked. It was super weird, she didn’t say anything. “
His meeting with Prince Harry and Markle did not go much better.
“I walked down the hall and I saw them in a room, and they just talk,” said Mendes. “And I walked in with this confidence and the moment they felt me coming in, I just turned around and my body went numb and I felt like it, I can’t do it.”
“I’ve never been this star, I walked in and didn’t stop, I just walked away in one move.”
