Welcome to Plathville: Lydia Plath Sings Her Troubles Away

Welcome to Plathville Spoilers says we thought Lydia Plath was graduating to become a real teenager, in a clip from the upcoming episode Welcome to Plathville, we see her falling down the rabbit hole once again, completely bent to the will of her parents. Some might think it’s so sweet, that Lydia feels guilty for betraying her parents‘ trust, and in a way she is, but in many ways this clip illustrates how attached Lydia is to her religious beliefs and how she’s taking life so seriously at such a young age. She looks as miserable as a three-time divorcee with three times as many children, not a carefree 17-year-old!

Welcome to Plathville: Lydia Plath Sings Her Troubles Away

All because she decided to text her crush without telling her parents first. “I’m probably more disappointed in myself than they are.” I hope that’s the case, I hope she just got caught up in a frenzy over nothing, because if whatever Kim and Barry Plath said to her inspired this kind of tearful, religious meltdown, then…. that’s worrisome. Lydia said that whenever she feels misguided she goes to the Holy Spirit – which in itself is not wrong – but the way she did it seems too emotional for someone who is only 17. I’ve seen 30-year-olds pray with less emotion.

Then, in a scene straight out of Carrie, she starts singing a hymn. Okay, it’s not that unusual, humming a hymn to yourself while praying, but it felt a little like she was giving the Holy Spirit a performance – not to say that her feelings were performative (she’s not Kim, after all) but spiritually it felt like she was yelling, “Mayday! Mayday!” to the Holy Spirit.

Some fans have pointed out and speculated that Lydia Plath’s mental and emotional health might be a little rough, so far it looks like she’s fine, but this last clip was pretty alarming, but maybe for those of us who didn’t grow up with that level of faith, or maybe no religious faith, it just looks that way from the outside.
