Onscreen drama? Cameron Mathison has seen it all. But offscreen? He learned about fan fury when he tried to “break up” a famous soap couple-Hayley and Mateo. They are played by the real-life power couple, Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos.
During a recent appearance on Live with Kelly and Mark, Cameron shared a hilarious but intense memory from his All My Children days. His character, Ryan, once made a move to ruin Hayley and Mateo’s relationship, and fans did not take it lightly.
“The only time I have ever played a character that’s been disliked this severely on soap operas,” Cameron recalled, “was when my character Ryan tried to break up Hayley and Mateo.”
And the hate? It went beyond social media. “I had a bus pull over on Columbus Avenue, and the bus driver got off yelling at me saying, ‘Stay away from Hayley!’” Cameron said, laughing. “I had people hating me! I’m like, ‘I’m a good guy!’”
Kelly and Mark React – And They’re All Smiles About It
Mark Consuelos was quick to defend Cameron, knowing the backlash came from fans confusing character with actor. “He was just doing his job,” Mark said supportively. And if anyone knows how passionate soap fans can be, it’s him.
Fans of All My Children and General Hospital had plenty to say too. And let’s be clear — they remember everything. “AMC was the best,” one fan wrote. Another gushed, “I remember! 🫣” while someone else joked, “That is so funny… because girl! Who wouldn’t!”
