The View’s Joy Behar is known for her quick wit and dry humor, but a recent revelation about her name left fans stunned. During an episode of the Behind the Table podcast, Joy shared the unusual and dark origin of her name, Josephine.
“I was born Josephine, named after my father’s mother, who was a little wacky, I understand,” Joy began. She then recounted a jaw-dropping story: “My grandfather went to Brooklyn to visit his brother and didn’t return for months. My grandmother, Josephine, sent him a note saying, ‘If you don’t come back, I’m going to kill myself and the children.’ Of which, there were three.”
Joy Behar’s tale had her trademark humor. She called her grandmother the “shrew of Turin, Italy.” Fans debated whether it was a grim joke or a peek into her family’s drama.
Her maternal grandfather gave her the nickname “La Gioia,” meaning “The Joy” in Italian, ensuring she’d carry a lighter moniker moving forward. Joy shared, “When I started school, they put me down as ‘Joy,’ even though my legal name was Josephine. And that’s who I’ve been ever since.”

Joy’s Bold Political Commentary on The View
Joy Behar’s humor isn’t limited to family anecdotes – her political commentary is equally cutting. On a recent episode of The View, she tackled the post-election fallout alongside her co-hosts. Producer Brian Teta noted that Joy seemed to be in “denial” over the new president-elect.
“I’m part of the La Resistance,” she quipped, adding that younger women should focus on self-discovery before marriage. Her advice? “Wait until you’re at least 30 before you get married. Women know themselves better with time.”
Joy also encouraged people to adopt a “so what, who cares” attitude when faced with false criticism. However, she clarified, “If something’s true, it needs to be addressed.”

As a board-certified dermatologist in practice for over two decades, I think I could lend a valuable voice to any discussion about our healthcare system,” Lee said, inviting her 30 million followers to weigh in.
