For those of you who have been waiting for the name of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s daughter to be revealed, the wait is finally over! The couple, through their brand Archewell, have announced that their daughter’s name will be Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, a beautiful and unique name for their baby. Many have been wondering what the significance of Lilibet is and how it ties back to the British royal family. On June 6, 2021, Harry and Meghan revealed to the world the birth of their second child, a daughter.

People Magazine confirms their announcement, which was made via their Archewell non-profit website, and reported: “It is with great joy that Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, welcome their daughter, Lilibet ‘Lili’ Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, to the world. The announcement also included a breakdown of the new daughter Lili’s name. Lili’s full name is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, and her more unique name was given as a family tribute.

The post reads: “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name, Diana, was chosen to honor her beloved late grandmother, The Princess of Wales.”

People Magazine also confirms the queen’s nickname with a handwritten note that Queen Elizabeth placed on Prince Phillip’s coffin at his funeral. The note was affectionately signed “Lilibet”. Reportedly, the name “Lily” or some variant of it has also been on Harry’s head. In 2019, prior to Archie’s birth, the couple visited Birkenhead, and Harry reportedly took a particular interest in both the suggestion of ‘Lily’ and its spelling.

Prince William and Kate Middleton also named one of their daughters after both the Queen and Princess Diana. Princess Charlotte, the middle of their three children, is fully named Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. It is extremely touching to know the tribute both brothers have paid to their mother and grandmother.

During an interview with Oprah in March 2021, the couple revealed that they are expecting a baby girl. They also shared that they don’t plan to have any more children after the arrival of their daughter, with Harry confirming: “Two is everything”. He added his glowing sentiments about having a daughter, “Grateful, having any child, any one or a two would have been amazing, but to have a boy and then a girl . . . Now we’ve got our family, and we’ve got four of us.”

The future is bright for the Mountbatten-Windsor family. Perhaps, when she’s ready, Lili will make an occasional appearance on Archewell’s podcast as Archie – who could forget her adorable version of ‘Happy New Year’ to usher in 2021?
