Savannah Chrisley, star of Chrisley Knows Best, has faced financial troubles since her parents, Todd and Julie Chrisley, were convicted of fraud and sentenced to long prison terms. Recently, on her Unlocked podcast, she openly discussed her struggles and the significant changes in her life.
“People comment and will say, like, ‘Oh, I feel so sorry for you, living off of mom and daddy’s stolen money,’” Savannah said, addressing the common misconception that she’s still living in luxury. “But I struggled. Like, I know what it feels like to not know how you’re going to pay your bills that month.”
Savannah Chrisley said her parents went to prison. She was left managing three mortgages and raising her brother, Grayson, and niece, Chloe. “I was just getting into real estate, and your first year, you’re pretty much working for every deal,” she added.
Despite having appeared on multiple TV shows, Savannah is not “sitting on millions of dollars.” In fact, she has had to adjust her lifestyle significantly, saying, “I used to not have to go to the grocery store and look at prices. I was at a point where I had to tell the kids no to stuff.”
Government Takes a Cut of Her Parents’ House Sale
Savannah Chrisley had to manage the household. She also faced a financial challenge in selling her parents’ home. She revealed that the government stepped in, demanding a portion of the commission from the sale. “They would not allow me to sell the house if they didn’t get the money,” Savannah shared, explaining that her lawyer eventually negotiated the government’s cut down to 1.5%.
Her parents’ actions have complicated her struggles with the law. But, Savannah has shown resilience in managing the fallout from Todd and Julie’s downfall.
Todd and Julie Chrisley’s Shocking Sentencing
The emotional toll of her parents’ sentencing still weighs heavily on Savannah. During the podcast, she recounted the moment when the reality of the prison sentences hit her. Savannah said she didn’t cry initially but fell apart once she got home. “I literally walked in the door and collapsed,” she recalled. “I couldn’t even function.”
Savannah said her parents could spend a few months with family before reporting to their prisons. This brief reprieve gave them time to prepare emotionally. “Everyone was shocked when the judge gave them until January to report,” she noted. Todd began his 12-year sentence in Florida, while Julie is serving seven years in Kentucky.
Finding Strength Through Adversity
Since Todd and Julie Chrisley were jailed, Savannah has become the guardian for Grayson and Chloe. She manages their emotional and financial needs, driven by a desire to prioritize the children, despite her own struggles.
“I don’t know how I did it, but somehow I was able to do it,” Savannah said, reflecting on how she’s handled the challenges. Despite the obstacles, Savannah focuses on her real estate career. She hopes a new project will revive reality TV.
