Meri Brown’s tumultuous relationship with Kody Brown has been one of Sister Wives’ most compelling storylines. After years of estrangement and heartache, Meri decided to terminate their spiritual marriage. While the decision was hers, it wasn’t easy — and it came with emotional texts, church rulings, and second-guessing.
In a recent episode, Meri Brown shared the heartfelt text she sent Kody after officially receiving her release from their church.
“I texted him and he called me within 20 minutes,” Meri revealed to friends Jenn and Brandi. “It was a good text. … Do you want to hear it?”
With raw emotion, she read the message aloud:
“Hi Kody, just wanted to follow up from the text I sent a couple weeks ago. Just wanted to let you know that I had a conversation with the leadership in Utah today and the official release was granted. I’m brokenhearted that our life came to this. I will always love and respect you. Thank you for many years of joy. I hope you truly will have peace now and I release you from any responsibility or worry about me. I got this.”
Kody Brown’s reaction was immediate, calling her to ask, “Why did you do it so fast? Do you have a guy on the side waiting?” Meri found the comment “insulting,” given his lack of interest in saving their marriage.

Sister Wives: Kody Brown’s “Abandonment” Label Sparks Controversy
The church granted Meri’s release on the grounds of “abandonment,” a label that infuriated Kody. Despite his protests, fans and Meri saw the label as fitting.
Kody Brown admitted on Sister Wives that he had not been intimate with Meri for years. He spent most of his time with Robyn and rarely offered emotional support.
“He was so flippant and comfortable talking badly about me,” Meri said, voicing her frustration. For years, fans watched Kody’s dismissive behavior toward her, so the church’s decision came as no surprise to viewers.
Sister Wives: Meri Brown Nearly Second-Guessed Her Decision
The emotional rollercoaster didn’t end there. During her move to Utah, Kody helped Meri pack and surprised her with kind words and tears.
Kody told her, “You’ll always be my favorite ex-wife,” and expressed regret for how their relationship ended. These comments made Meri pause.
For a moment, she wondered if she had made the right choice. “I thought maybe I should have tried harder to save the marriage,” she admitted.
