Sister Wives star Meri Brown is no longer tied to Kody Brown in any way – and she’s perfectly okay with it. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Meri revealed that while she and Kody remain “friendly,” their relationship is far from amicable or close.
“When we’re in each other’s space, we are friendly and kind with each other,” Meri, 53, said. “But we’re just not friends. Certainly not friends.”
After their official split in January 2023 and Meri’s subsequent departure from the Brown family’s Flagstaff home, the TLC star made the bold move of terminating their spiritual marriage through their shared faith – a step she felt was crucial for her emotional closure.
“I needed to terminate the marriage on every level,” Meri Brown shared. “It was important for me to break all ties completely, regardless of the fact that I’m not part of that church anymore. It was just what I needed to move forward.”
Sister Wives: Kody’s Emotional Reaction Caught Meri Off Guard
While Meri seemed resolute in ending their relationship, Kody Brown’s reaction to her departure left her puzzled. In a recent Sister Wives episode, Kody broke down in tears, reminiscing about their “special” connection.
“Honestly, it just doesn’t make sense to me that he would say one thing and then act like he’s all brokenhearted,” Meri Brown admitted. “I think it surprised him, too. It was like, ‘Oh, okay. It’s done. It’s over.’”
Meri explained that she had emotionally detached from Kody Brown years ago, making his reaction even more confusing. “I’d been dealing with it for many, many years prior,” she noted.

Since leaving Flagstaff, Meri has been thriving in her new chapter. Relocating to Utah, she’s reconnected with supportive friends and carved out a life filled with purpose and positivity.
“It’s been really good,” Meri said of her life post-Kody. “Very busy building businesses, doing all the things.”
Meri’s friends Jenn and Blair have played a pivotal role in her newfound happiness. During Sunday night’s episode, Jenn stood up for Meri while Kody attempted to manipulate her emotionally, showing fans that Meri finally has the support she deserves.
