The original TLC series ‘My 600-lb Life‘ is a series that documents the weight loss journey of a different individual with each episode. They start with a minimum weight of 600 pounds (270 kg) and work for a year to reduce it and become a healthier, more fit version of themselves. The entire process is done in Houston with the help of Dr. Now, a strict diet, and allowing surgery, and then broadcast to us on our television screens. One of these individuals who appeared on the show was Lashanta White.
My 600-lb Life: Lashanta ’s Story
We were introduced for the first time to 39-year-old Lashanta White from Kenner, Louisiana, in season 7, episode 16 of the show. The mother of four children weighed 662 pounds and was practically bedridden for more than two years due to her debilitating lymphedema. She was afraid that life would pass her by and had only one goal: to become healthier before she turned 40.
She was willing to meet Dr. Now in her Houston office and get the help she needed to achieve her goal, but she couldn’t find anyone to help her make the trip. Her mother, who was sometimes her caregiver, and her boyfriend JT, were no help at all. While her mother said the words “no mother wants a fat daughter”, he said he wouldn’t want to be with her if she lost too much weight.
Fortunately, Lashanta’s children came forward and took her to Houston to see Dr. Now, where she was later told that she was too old to undergo weight loss surgery immediately because it would not be safe. She had to work on her health herself before any medical assistance could be provided and she was given strict orders and a diet plan. So, her long year of weight loss journey began.
My 600-lb Life: Where Is Lashanta White, The Star Of ‘My 600-lb Life,’ Now?
Lashanta White’s weight loss trip in the first eight months of the program was virtually non-existent. The fact that her boyfriend, JT, broke up with her during that time didn’t help the situation. “Without JT, I have no one to help me anymore.” She said on the show after she broke up, “So I’m really depressed about that, because I feel like every time I try to turn my life around and get my head out of the water, I feel like there’s something tripping me up and dragging me down again.
It wasn’t until the ninth month, when Dr. Now told her that he wouldn’t be able to help her if she didn’t start losing weight, that she started taking things seriously. In her last three months, Lashanta White dropped a staggering 133 pounds all by herself and got approval for weight loss surgery.
The only condition presented by Dr. Now was that she first needed to regain her mobility. “Once you’re able to get up and walk, then we do weight loss surgery,” he told Lashanta White. Toward the end of the episode, she was heard saying, “I can’t wait for all the good, positive things to come to me. Although she seems to focus on her health, she never revealed the exact amount of weight she lost.
