Jamie Otis, known from The Bachelor and Married at First Sight, shared her postpartum depression struggle after Hendrix’s birth.
Now expecting twins, she openly talks about her fears of a relapse. This shows her increasing focus on her mental health.
Speaking to US Weekly, Otis revealed, “I had a really, really, really tough time postpartum with my son. I had such bad postpartum depression and I’m a labor and delivery nurse.”
Her professional background gave her insight into her symptoms, yet, she admitted, “I recognized that it was happening, but I couldn’t figure out how to help myself.”
Otis described feeling overwhelmed by suicidal thoughts. She felt this way despite having a seemingly perfect life, which she recognized as irrational.
“My life was great, but yet I was suicidal and it didn’t make any sense and I knew that in my heart,” she said.
Her openness sheds light on the silent battle many new mothers face, emphasizing the crucial step of seeking help.
A Spiral of Doubt
Jamie Otis, in a postpartum state, felt intense emotional turmoil. She suspected her husband, Doug Hehner, of cheating. This suspicion was unfounded.
She even took small things, like a mask in Hehner’s car, to be evidence. But, it later turned out to belong to the nanny. She admitted, “You can take those signs and you can really develop a story in your own mind.”
Fortunately, therapeutic intervention helped provide her with the perspective needed to see the irrationality of her fears.
Jamie Otis overcame depression. She identified her thinking distortions with help from her husband and therapist.
Hehner’s support and admiration for her resilience highlighted her growth. The couple now shares their journey and keeps in touch with fans, who they see as family.
