Arguably one of the most touching true-life series on television, My 600-lb Life focuses entirely on the lives and struggles of certain individuals who all weigh more than 600 pounds. Throughout the series, hosted by TLC, the crews document how obesity affects the participants and their families, and any attempts the afflicted individual may make to lose weight.
Ontreon Shannon, who lives in Plano, Texas, explains that in addition to his weight, he has a number of health problems, including heart failure and advanced diabetes. On top of that, Ontreon Shannon shares that he takes 13-14 different medications to keep his heart from failing.
There seem to be quite a few rather disturbing things going on in his life, but Ontreon Shannon claims that his reason for going on day after day is that he has a wife and a mother to look after. As the episode progresses, fans will see that there are clear stressors that have fuelled his eating habits, and there is noticeable tension between Ontreon and his loved ones. Not so much that they are angry with him, of course, but that they are determined to help him overcome his obesity.
First of all, Ontreon Shannon is honest with his doctor; he explains that although he doesn’t know what steps he needs to take to lose weight, he is willing to do whatever it takes to do so. Initially, the doctor believes that Ontreon lacks the commitment to take on such a task, but he perseveres, through exercise, therapy and a variety of other preventative measures.
What Is My 600-lb Life Star Ontreon Shannon Doing Today?
Ontreon Shannon faces some difficulties in the early stages of his process, but finds solace in his faith and the love and support of his loved ones. Although at several points it seems that Ontreon is at least making mental progress towards overcoming the bad habits that caused his obesity, ultimately he still seems to be missing out, even at the end of this episode. His last check-up saw him gain 15 kilos in the two months since his last appointment, when he was supposed to lose 80 kilos.
“It feels like no matter what I do it’s never going to be good enough,” Ontreon exclaims to viewers, clearly disturbed by his weight gain. The doctor tells Ontreon that it looks like they’ve done all they can do for him, prompting Ontreon to plead with him not to give up yet, saying he feels some progress has been made.
The doctor insists, telling Ontreon Shannon that he feels it is an emotional display and lacks the conviction to make a real difference. He adds that time is running out and that only Ontreon can make the decision to change the course of his life. The episode ends with Ontreon saying that he is “just beginning”.
Ontreon Shannon won’t give up without a fight and his convictions seem to have grown over time. Despite the fact that he hasn’t posted an update on Facebook about what his weight is at the moment, he has shared that he seems to be getting healthier every day.
Now living in McKinney, Tx. and still married, Ontreon seems to have a positive outlook on life.
