Whitney Thore has been a champion of body positivity ever since she burst onto the scene with her viral dance video. However, that doesn’t mean Thore hasn’t thought about taking a different path when it comes to changing her physical appearance. Pandemic and a major disruption in Whitney’s life over the past year have led her to do something she may not have considered in the past: seek out and consider weight loss surgery.

During the pandemic, Whitney Thore was as isolated as the rest of the world, but she was also nursing a great deal of grief at the time. Early in the pandemic, she and her boyfriend, Chase Severino, broke up after it was revealed that he had cheated on her with someone else and that woman was pregnant with his child. It was right after the breakup that Thore began contemplating weight loss surgery.

Unlike other instances where Whitney brought up the topic of weight loss surgery, fans saw in season eight that Thore took the extra step to find more information about the whole process. With her brother Hunter by her side, she virtually participated in a consultation with a bariatric doctor to understand the process and get answers to her questions. At the time, she was not committed to taking the next step after the initial consultation.

Over time, Thore realized that this may have been a decision based on overcoming her pain.

My Big Fat Fabulous Life: Whitney Thore and Surgery

Although fans saw Whitney seriously consider undergoing weight loss surgery in the eighth season of My Big Fat Fabulous Life, it seems she didn’t go through with it.

In the fourth and fifth episodes of season nine, Whitney Thore goes to a big girl retreat with her friend Ashley and others she’s never met before. At this retreat, she brings up that her relationship with Severino other factors made her consider, such as wanting people, in general, to treat her better and thinking that this would happen if she were thinner.

During this episode, there was no indication that Whitney had taken any further steps toward weight loss surgery. It seems unlikely that this will happen in the near future because season nine also features Thore’s decision to freeze her eggs to protect her ability to have children in the future.
