When the Brown family first appeared on TLC’s Sister Wives, they aimed to show a harmonious polygamist family.
Kody Brown, the patriarch, seemed dedicated to his wives: Meri, Janelle, and Christine. However, one key event in season 1 revealed cracks in their facade.
Kody was courting Robyn Brown during this time. To bond with her future sister-wives, Robyn took Meri, Janelle, and Christine wedding dress shopping.
The outing was meant to be a bonding experience. But Kody later revealed he had secretly returned to the shop with Robyn to choose her dress.
This secretive act sowed seeds of mistrust between Robyn and the other wives.
Favoritism Toward Robyn Brown
Kody’s favoritism toward Robyn became even more evident by the end of season 1.
Christine revealed that Kody had little involvement in planning their wedding, whereas Robyn had a lavish ceremony and reception. Robyn’s celebration seemed more about her and Kody than the family.
Robyn and Kody further distanced themselves from the family with an 11-day honeymoon, leaving the other wives feeling neglected. This pattern continued, with Kody consistently prioritizing Robyn.
So Kody going on and on about all Robyn has done to earn “favor” was basically a very verbose way of saying Robyn is his favorite. #SisterWives #SisterWivesTellAll pic.twitter.com/mIShRsZuNX

Trust Issues Among the Wives
The other wives, Meri, Janelle, and Christine, felt the imbalance. Christine believed Robyn sought monogamy, not a polygamist family.
Kody’s preference for spending time with Robyn deepened the divide. Christine noted, “For one month, I got him as much as Robyn got him the rest of the time.”
Janelle also struggled to connect with Robyn, admitting, “We just never gelled.” The constant favoritism towards Robyn led to a breakdown in trust and unity within the Brown family.
