For some, weight loss is a simple matter of eating more vegetables and increasing their activity. They then measure progress by a looser waistline and a number on the scale that is 10 or 15 kilos less than before.
For others, however, the journey is much longer and harder. For example, the stars of My 600-Lb Life can’t just give up sweets and quit. They need to lose hundreds of pounds and they need medical intervention to do it. But when they do, they have the chance to change their whole lives.
Two of the most memorable stars of the show’s fifth season were twins Brandi and Kandi Dreier. The 29-year-old sisters from Vancouver, Washington, survived a horrific childhood marked by drug-addicted parents and sexual and emotional abuse.
They learned early on to turn to food for comfort and eventually both became so heavy they could barely get out of bed. Together, the Dreiers visited Dr. Now, a Houston-based doctor who performs bariatric surgeries to reduce the size of patients’ stomachs and make it easier for them to eat less.
Like the rest of the cast of “My 600-Lb Life”, the nurses had to commit to losing 50 pounds on their own before being approved for surgery. Both did admirably, but because of Dr Now’s concern for Kandi Dreier’s heart, he allowed her to continue her independent weight-loss plan for a full eight months before she was given a surgery date (via Cinemaholic).
Where Is Brandi and Kandi Dreier From My 600-Lb Life Now?
While her sister’s operation went smoothly, Kandi Dreier’s almost turned tragic. Just hours after the operation, she went into cardiac arrest and was put into a medically induced coma (via Us Weekly).
Despite fears that he could have suffered brain damage from lack of oxygen, Kandi made a full recovery – and stayed on target. According to InTouch, both Brandi and Kandi lost more than 200 pounds in the first year after surgery, but they didn’t stop there.
In the four years since the episode of My 600-Lb Life aired, they’ve both continued to shed pounds, so much so that now they barely resemble their heavier selves (via Shareably). Best of all, their new bodies have given them a fresh start. Kandi Dreier, who continues to be active on Facebook, posts every now and then to share her joy with her followers. In her photos, she’s proudly “Titi” to her two young nieces (yes, Brandi is now a married mother), whom she has nicknamed “Boog” and “Goob”.
